When Should You See a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist?
If you've ever wondered whether pelvic floor physical therapy is right for you, you're already asking the right question. Most people we meet wish they had walked through our doors sooner. Not because something was wrong with them, but because they didn't realize how much better daily life could feel.
Pelvic floor PT isn't only for postpartum moms or people who've had surgery. It's for anyone whose body is asking for support, whether that's during pregnancy, in the years around menopause, after a tough workout, or simply because something doesn't feel quite like it used to. Here's a clear look at when seeing a pelvic floor PT can make a real difference and what to expect when you do.
What Is a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist, Anyway?
A pelvic floor physical therapist is a Doctor of Physical Therapy with advanced training in the muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissue of the pelvis, hips, low back, and core. We look at the whole body, how you breathe, how you move, how you load your tissues during the activities you love, and build a plan that helps you feel strong, confident, and at home in your body again.
At Rally, every initial evaluation is 90 minutes of one-on-one time. No rushing, no double-booking, no being passed off to a tech. Just you, your story, and a personalized plan.
Signs It's Time to Book an Evaluation
You don't have to wait for things to feel unbearable. If any of the following sound familiar, this is your sign:
Leaking with activity or daily life. Whether it's a sneeze, a run, jumping rope, lifting weights,, or lifting your toddler, leaking is common but not normal. It's also very treatable. You don't have to plan your outfits or your workouts around it.
Pain with sex (dyspareunia). Sex shouldn’t hurt. If it does, your pelvic floor, hips, nervous system, or hormones may all be part of the picture. A skilled pelvic PT can help you understand what's happening and guide you back to comfort and connection.
Pelvic pressure, heaviness, or a sense of "something falling." These sensations often point to pelvic organ prolapse, and they respond beautifully to thoughtful, progressive care. You have far more options than you've been told.
You're pregnant or planning to be. Preparing your body for pregnancy and birth is one of the most empowering things you can do. We help you build strength, breath capacity, and birth-readiness so you walk into labor feeling prepared, not anxious.
You're postpartum (whether that's six weeks or six years out). Postpartum is forever. If you're still navigating core weakness, back or hip pain, scar issues from a c-section or tearing, or you're returning to running and lifting, pelvic PT meets you where you are.
You're in perimenopause or menopause. Hormonal shifts change the tissues, joints, and pelvic floor in real ways. Dryness, urgency, new aches, changes in workouts that used to feel easy all of it deserves attention. This stage of life can be powerful, and your body can rise to meet it.
You're an athlete or active adult dealing with hip, low back, or pelvic pain. If your squats, runs, lifts, or rides aren't feeling quite right, the pelvic floor is often the missing piece your other providers haven't checked.
Painful periods, bladder urgency, constipation, or tailbone pain. These aren't things you have to live with. They're signals, and they're worth listening to.
Neck pain, shoulder pain, or jaw tension that won't budge. Surprisingly, but true the pelvic floor and the diaphragm work as a team, and tension at one end of the system often shows up at the other.
You Don't Need a Referral (and You Don't Need a Diagnosis)
In North Carolina, you can come straight to a physical therapist without going through your doctor first. You also don't need a label or a diagnosis to get started. Curiosity is enough. If something feels off, or even if everything feels okay and you just want to feel stronger, that's a good reason to book.
What Your First Visit Looks Like at Rally
Your initial evaluation is 90 minutes, and it's a conversation as much as it is an exam. We'll talk through your history, your goals, and what's been getting in your way. We'll assess your movement, breath, posture, and if you're comfortable, your pelvic floor. Internal assessment is always optional and always consent-based. From there, you'll leave with a clear plan, a few things to start practicing, and a much better understanding of your own body.
